The "Nooks" Project
The “Nooks” Project is an effort to rethink and renovate shared, small, public spaces and learning environments. Conceived by the Task Force for the CMU Experience, this initiative aims to create more spaces for students to gather and collaborate: to learn, to have fun and to enjoy the exchange of ideas.
To date, the Task Force has identified several high-traffic spaces that could benefit from sustainable upgrades, redesign efforts and bite-sized improvements for major impact. If you think that power outlets, ergonomic seating, better lighting and a fresh coat of paint are merely cosmetic, think again. These enhancements keep the community connected and engaged and help to promote a sense of community while we learn, grow, discover and play together.
Last year, 11 nooks were identified for improvements during a comprehensive review of nearly 100 classrooms. So far two nooks have been completed, and they are being used frequently by students before and after class.
With nine nooks to finish by Commencement in May 2018, Interim President Farnam Jahanian has agreed to match all gifts to the Nooks Fund 1-to-1 on Giving Tuesday only, up to $10,000. If we reach the match limit, we can fully renovate two of the remaining 9 nooks to increase the utility of the space we have and enhance the student experience.
