Carnegie Mellon Racing 2017
Be a part of racing history by helping Carnegie Mellon Racing build our battery system!
WHO WE ARE
We are Carnegie Mellon Racing (CMR), Carnegie Mellon University's chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). We are a group of 70+ hardworking engineers across all disciplines, who are passionate about building race cars. More information about Carnegie Mellon Racing can be found at our website, here:
We have been building cars for the last fifteen years, and the 2017-2018 season marks our fifth electric car, named 18e. Every year, we build an electric race car completely from scratch, and compete at Formula SAE, an engineering design competition. Over the summer we took 17e, last year's car, to Barrie Ontario to compete at Formula North. At Formula North, we competed against six other electric cars, and placed second overall. Completing the car and competing at Formula SAE is essential to the team's ability to learn about engineering, and then iterate on old designs. Most of our members credit being a part of CMR to helping them succeed in their class projects, and in their careers. Money raised in this fundraiser will provide us the resources we need to complete our custom battery management system and battery pack.
WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE
17e was our first car that was completed and tested before competition, and coming off of that success, 18e will be Carnegie Mellon Racing's first car to break a three second 0 to 60 acceleration time. This will only be possible with our complex battery back and custom battery management system. 18e will be the first car with a fully custom battery management system, currently being implemented by two seniors on the team. This year, we shrunk the size of the Ancillary compartment (the container adjacent to the cell compartment, holding things such as the pack fuse and Battery Management System master board) in order to make more room for all new drivetrain components. The modular construction of our battery pack and the distributed nature of our Battery Management System is fairly unique among FSAE teams. The distributed nature of the BMS allows us to monitor a huge amount of safety information without an enormous mess of wires.
WHAT WE NEED
CMR needs your help in bringing our battery system to life. With your help, we will be able to implement our new BMS system and make advancements within our team on electrical design that very few other teams have the resources to do. These advancements will also help members of the team evolve in their knowledge and understanding of more complex systems, something that can't be taught in class. Your money will directly go towards this design, manufacturing, and cost intensive system, and will ensure that our car runs smoothly.
Thank you! Any donation in any amount is greatly appreciated. It is because of donors like you that we have been able to continue our race car legacy.
