Heinz College Internship Opportunity Fund
About the Heinz College Internship Opportunity Fund
The mission of Heinz College was laid out over four decades ago by founding Dean William Cooper; Dean Cooper sought to education "men and women for intelligent action," and Heinz students continue to live up to that promise today. The Heinz College Internship Opportunity Fund (IOF) is a student led fundraising organization that provides stipends for Graduate student internships. In recent years, Heinz students have taken internships with organizations like the Woolly Mammoth theater company in Washington, D.C, the Office of the Mayor in Philadelphia, PA, and the United Nations OCHA in Geneva, Switzerland. These internships provide Heinz students with hands on experience in their field and give the organizations the opportunity to utilize the skills that are the cornerstone of a Heinz education.
What We Do
As part of the graduation requirement, Heinz students must take a full time internship during the summer between their first and second years. Many of these internships, particularly in the public service or arts sectors, are low or non-paying. The Heinz IOF aims to provide stipends to support these students. In supporting the Heinz IOF, you are not only contributing to a graduate student stipend fund, you are helping to support the programs, communities, and organizations in which they serve.
The funds raising by the Heinz IOF are used to pay for the living expenses for graduate students who take on these primarily arts service oriented internships. Oftentimes, students find themselves heading off to different cities or foreign countries to meet their internship requirement; these stipends help see them through the summer while serving their organization.
We are hoping to raise $4,000 during this year’s crowdfunding cycle which could provide a summer’s worth of support for between 2 and 4 graduate students depending on need. Students become eligible for IOF funding by participating in the annual fundraising campaign. Each year, students organize clothing sales, pancake breakfasts, face to face development meetings with faculty and alumni, and a direct mail campaign to raise funds for this organization.
Why You Should Give
All contributions made to the Heinz Internship Opportunity Fund are matched dollar for dollar by Carnegie Mellon University, which underscores the high esteem in which the IOF is held by the University at large. This match also magnifies the impact that each and every gift has. The dedicated students working on the IOF campaign are committed to making a difference in their field and in their community. The members of the Heinz College Internship Opportunity Fund ask you to join us by making a contribution today; together we can make great things happen in Pittsburgh and around the world.
