Lunar Gala 2020
Lunar Gala was originally created in 1997 to ring in the Chinese New Year, otherwise referred to as the Lunar New Year. As a part of the celebration, it is customary to wear new clothes which has inspired our fashion show. Since its inception in 1997, Lunar Gala has transformed into a highly anticipated event that hundreds hope to be part of and thousands hope to come see.
Now, Lunar Gala is arguably one of the largest fashion events in Pittsburgh, having sold out nearly 1100 seats each year with 140+ students involved in producing, designing, modeling, and dancing in the show. Students across all majors and backgrounds create original and creative lines, infusing technology and complex materials with wearable fashion. Design teams in the past have created looks that incorporated mood sensing Intel chips, glow-in the dark resin, sheet metal, and much more reflecting culture, technology, and reactions to current events in society.

A major part of Lunar Gala are the looks designed and created by students. The money needed to purchase materials and bring these looks into existence comes out of each designers pocket. Because of this, designers incur the largest personal cost of any other members of the organization. Our designers on average spend between $500-$3,000 on their lines. This year we have 17 design teams. In total, the reflects an approximate total cost of $29,750.
Unfortunately, at this time Lunar Gala is not in a position to support our designers financially. Therefore, we are reaching out to ask for donations to offset designer costs and support the completion of the their lines.
