Carnegie Mellon Varsity Volleyball Europe Trip
WHO IS CARNEGIE MELLON VOLLEYBALL?
Hi there! My name is Emily and this is Molly. We are captains of the CMU volleyball team and just want to tell you a little bit about who we are as a team.
Being a part of this team has meant so much to the two of us. Carnegie Mellon is a one of a kind community, and the student athletes are no exception. When we first stepped on campus 2 weeks before the start of our freshmen year, we did not know what to expect. Thankfully, it only took one grueling day of preseason practices to create a lasting bond among our team. We quickly learned that all of our teammates were unique in their own ways, coming from different backgrounds, pursuing a wide variety of career interests, and providing a special personality to our team.
During our first year on this team, we often found ourselves feeling inspired and driven to be the best versions of ourselves. When you are surrounded by a group of highly-motivated student athletes who not only juggle the immense workload of their CMU education but excel on and off the court, it is hard to not feel immense respect and admiration for your teammates. This high level of respect is one of the main reasons why this team provides a one of a kind support system. Emily and I realized early on how important it was to have a group of girls that you could rely on which is why we constantly strive to make sure the members of this team are always there for each other and encourage personal development among our teammates.
Our team has been through many highs and lows. From being ranked in the top 25 teams in the nation, to finishing fifth in our conference and ultimately falling short of the NCAA tournament for the past 2 seasons. This team is ready now more than ever to get back into the NCAA tournament like Emily, myself and the rest of the rising senior class experienced in the fall of 2013. The roads to NCAAs is not easy, but it is something we have been preparing for each and every day for the past 2 years, putting countless hours in at the weight room and spending time together as a team.
We are now in a unique position where we are returning 16 of 17 players from our past season. We have an all american, multiple first team UAA conference players, and a 2014 Rookie of the year. This upcoming year is our senior year, and we have seen how much this team has grown over the past 3 years. We believe that this trip will begin our preseason, lead us into our regular season, and help define how this season goes. We want our chance to compete in the NCAA tournament this year and make a name for ourselves nationally. This trip will give us the unique opportunity to bond and grow together like no other.
ABOUT THE TRIP
The Carnegie Mellon University Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team is hosting this crowdfunding project to raise money for our team trip to Europe. In order for our team to go on this trip, we need to raise enough money for all of our athletes’ travel expenses including airfare, hotels, food, and land transportation. The team will be traveling to three European nations in the summer of 2016 before our preseason begins. We are going on this trip in order to experience volleyball on an international level while gaining a greater cultural awareness. We plan to see historic sites such as Auschwitz Birkenau, The Berlin Wall, and Prague Castle. We believe that this trip will help build character in each of us as individual players as well as unite the team. This trip will contribute to our CMU experience as a whole, and allow us to bring our insight back to the campus community.
NOTES FROM OUR COACHES
"This trip will provide the team with the opportunity to explore the eastern part of Europe and learn about other cultures and the suffering that they endured throughout their history. The trip will give the volleyball team the opportunity to bond like never before. In the sport of volleyball, working as a team is so important. It is a true team sport. The experiences learned on a trip like this will help enhance the Carnegie Mellon experience. Community service and playing on an international level will help mold these players as outstanding community members of this campus and enhance their desire to become the best at the sport that they love."
-Kim Kelly, Head Coach
"Our trip to Berlin, Krakow, and Prague this summer will give our team shared cultural experiences outside of the gym and bring us together on another level. It is a trip of a lifetime that our players will remember as a time when they were able to experience the cultures of Eastern Europe while witnessing their team become a family. I am so excited to travel with this group of exceptional young women!"
