Juntos 2021: Creating Ties
About Us and Our Mission
Juntos is an organization comprised of CMU students from a multitude of majors, disciplines, and backgrounds. What knits our group together is a collective passion for domestic and international services, specifically in Latin America.
Juntos focuses on creating sustainable, effective initiatives to positively impact Pittsburgh and small communities in Latin America, particularly in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. We also strive to raise awareness of cultural and political issues affecting Latin America in our local Pittsburgh community.
In Summer 2021, we will be traveling to a rural community in the Dominican Republic where we will lead education and art workshops, work on house repairs, and engage in cultural exchange with the families who live there. Throughout the year, Juntos hosts events to foster cultural dialogue on CMU’s campus, in the greater Pittsburgh community, and the communities we travel to.
Since 2010, Juntos has partnered with Bridges to Community, a U.S.-based nonprofit that works with rural communities in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Our past projects include:
Constructing eco-friendly and renewable latrines
Supporting a local chocolate factory (ChocoTrim) by painting a mural and leading Microsoft Office workshops to help the cooperative keep track of finances
Building pro-respiratory stoves that pipe smoke out of the cooking area, burn wood more efficiently, and improve the health of women and children previously affected by the poorly ventilated traditional stoves
Painting murals depicting healthy pregnancy behavior for a maternity clinic and important community values for a youth center
Leading art workshops in local schools to foster creativity and connections between elementary school children, their families, and Juntos members
Teaching computer workshops in the local youth center to help children learn the importance and versatility of emails and Microsoft Office
Our annual service trip is imperative to maintain these long-time cultural connections. However, meeting the cost of the trip is our greatest challenge. Our approximate total cost is $20,000, which will cover travel expenses, homestays, construction materials, and project supplies. In order to meet these costs, we raise money throughout the year by selling food on campus, organizing university events and fundraisers, participating in studies, and more.
We fundraise tirelessly throughout the school year, but despite this, we cannot meet our full goal without your help. Carnegie Mellon has taught us that anything is possible when you have a supportive community behind you. We call on not only our local community but all those who believe in our mission and values to help make this trip a reality for Juntos. With the help of our supportive community, we will be able to make a difference in the Dominican Republic and in our local Pittsburgh community.
