The META Festival
The Meeting of the European Theatre Academies (META) Festival is held in the heart of Florence, Italy. In the past year, the schools invited included the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from London, the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático from Madrid, and the Accademia Teatrale di Firenze from Florence. Each school brings a piece of theatre to be performed in the beautiful Teatro Della Pergola, one of the oldest theaters in Italy.
The Festival takes place over five days, in which students take classes with inspirational teachers from renowned international schools, attend performances by the other conservatory programs in the evening, and afterwards have the opportunity to explore the gorgeous city of Florence.
This year, Carnegie Mellon School of Drama has been honored with an invitation as the first American conservatory program to attend and participate in this year's META festival.
We, a chosen group of eight sophomore and junior acting/ musical theatre artists, are hard at work collaborating to present a new piece of theatre. It is based on each of our unique perspectives and the experiences we have had growing up in America. The premise of the piece is America today, in 2018. We want to present this country as it is: flawed, beautiful, and deeply divided. To create it, we've assembled a cast of passionate and diverse artists, dedicated to using their voices and creativity to share with these European Artists what it means to be a young person in America.
We're calling it "Divided, We Stand."
It is a big trip for the eight of us to make it to Florence. Airfare alone for a round trip from Pittsburgh to Florence can easily cost $2,000 for one student. So, in order to ensure each valued member of our ensemble can make it to the META festival, we're looking to raise $10,000 to help ease the financial difficulty of expenses including airfare, food, and other accommodations.
We're the first American Theatre Conservatory to be invited to share our talents and perspectives with long established, proud European schools. This is an amazing chance for us young artists to make connections; but it's an even better chance to pave the way for future schools to participate in this festival. We have the opportunity to create an international connection between American Theatre and European Theatre; crucial in a time when we are so divided as countries. We believe that art has the power of changing the world, so in helping us get to the META festival, you can be apart of creating global theatre connections and bringing the world just a little bit closer.
